A WOMAN who said she was raped by a man in a youth hostel yesterday denied to jurors the pair had consensual sex.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have been raped by Zilvinas Ruzgas, 40, after he met her outside Thirst nightclub, in Park End Street, Oxford.

Prosecutor Matthew Walsh said Ruzgas, of Odessa Road, London, “targeted” the “drunk and vulnerable”

woman and raped her at the YHA Oxford youth hostel, in Botley Road, in December 2013.

Richard Thomas, defending at Oxford Crown Court, referred to a statement by the complainant to police that she was “crying and sobbing” after the alleged rape.

He said: “Is it not the case you weren’t crying throughout the whole time you were having consensual sexual activity?”

From behind a screen she said: “No, that’s not the case.”

Mr Thomas said: “There are times at which your memory is hazy, there are things that you remember and things that you don’t remember; is that the case?”

She said: “Yes.”

The woman denied she was “paranoid about the circumstances you had got yourself into” after waking up naked with a “number of other men” in the room.

He put it to her that CCTV footage of them outside the club showed her touching Ruzgas’s hand and neck. She said it looked like she was pointing and trying to get her balance. Ruzgas denies two counts of rape and one of attempted rape.

The trial continues.
