A WOMAN who forced the closure of the Eastern Bypass for almost three hours today has been handed over to mental health authorities.
The woman had climbed over the railings of the Barns Road bridge just before noon and was sitting on the ledge above the Eastern Bypass as police tried to talk her down today.
The bypass had to be closed for the safety of traffic and police and eventually the woman agreed to come down at about 3.15pm, climbing aborad a cherrypicker.
Police have tonight said she had been detained under the Mental Health Act.
It is believed that at one point this afternoon officers had tied her to the bridge as a safety precaution.
Due to an incident, we are unable to serve Barns Road on our 5 service. Services will divert via Ring Road in both directions. (1)
