A TEMPORARY replacement car park for Oxford’s Westgate multi-storey will open on Monday.

The two-storey car park beside the ice rink in Oxpens has about 420 spaces and will accommodate extra Christmas traffic before the 1,200-space Westgate car park shuts on Monday, January 5.

Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said: “The temporary car park will help to keep the city centre car parking numbers at a reasonable level for most day-to-day requirements, but at peak times, we would encourage motorists to think about using the park-and-ride sites and the excellent bus services. We are of course looking forward to the new Westgate car park coming on stream in autumn 2017.”

Construction work on the £500m shopping centre – which includes 70 new shops, a five-screen cinema, cafes and restaurants – will begin next month.

Council board member for transport John Tanner said: “The city council is determined to keep Oxford open for shoppers. Biking, bussing and park-and-ride are best.

“But if people need to park there will be a limited number of car spaces in the heart of the city right through the building of the new Westgate shopping centre.”

Charges at the Oxpens car park fall into line with other city prices, £2.50 for an hour, up to £23 for 24 hours.
