NEW equipment has been installed in a Greater Leys skatepark, ending a two-year wait.

A T-shaped concrete block and long metal rail was installed in Fry’s Hill Park on Friday by Groundworks South, contracted by Oxford City Council.

It ends a long period of inactivity after Blackbird Leys Parish Council set aside £5,000 out of its £30,000 annual budget to help add more to the skatepark in 2012.

Groundwork South worker Rob Tilley said the work had been delayed because of consultations with the skateboarders and problems with suppliers.

Chairman Gordon Roper called the delay “frustrating” but said that he was pleased the work had finally been completed.

He said: “It’s disappointing the summer’s over, but the kids are still using it in the evenings.”

The skatepark replaced a facility in Cuddesdon Way which had been bulldozed to make way for the Co-op nursery in 2009.

The Co-op gave the city council £60,000 to build a replacement park but it was not finished until October 2012.
