IT can be hard to find an excuse to have a pint in the middle of the day.

But there was a perfectly good reason at Oxford Brookes on Thursday when the university launched a commemorative beer to mark its 150th anniversary next year.

John Henry, an IPA made to a recipe from 1864, will be on sale at Brookes from next week.

It was created by Brookes graduate Ed Murray, who now owns Shotover Brewing Company in Horspath.

He said: “We wanted to do something really, really special.

“We did some research and found an 1864 export IPA recipe which we have produced as closely as we can.

“This is a true export IPA, it’s special.”

Just 600 limited edition 750ml bottles of the beer will be available from the Brookes Restaurant and the Colonnade store on the Gipsy Lane campus, along with 336 smaller 500ml bottles.

The university, which began life as Oxford School of Art in 1865, officially gained university status in 1992.
