SIR Roger Bannister returned to Oxford’s famous Vincent’s Club as the club celebrated its 150th anniversary with the award of scholarships and bursaries for outstanding student athletes.

Sir Roger, who in May marked the 60th anniversary of the day he broke the four-minute mile barrier, was joined at Vincent’s last Wednesday by the vice-chancellor of the University, Professor Andrew Hamilton.

Prof Hamilton presented two scholarships and five bursaries to seven students with outstanding all-round records.

The fund, known as the Vincent’s Sports Development Fund, was officially launched earlier this year at the reopening of the newly refurbished club, in King Edward Street.
