NOT crumbling too much and graffiti free: Oxford’s ancient city walls were given a clean bill of health in yesterday’s traditional inspection.

The Lord Mayor Mohammed Abbasi climbed the 15-foot city wall – with the help of scaffolding – at New College in Holywell Street to inspect the large remaining section of the old city walls in the college grounds.

He said: “It wasn’t raining and the scaffolding was there so it was alright. It went very well.”

After giving the University of Oxford permission to build the college in 1379, King Richard II decreed that the city wall should be inspected every three years.

Mr Abbasi said of yesterday’s ceremony: “It is centuries old and it’s a formality.

“It was great.”
