OXFORD students raised £75,000 by donating things they were going to throw away to charity.
As part of the Moving Out campaign, donation banks were set up in halls of residences at Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University, in East Oxford, Headington and Jericho.
Students donated 43 tonnes of unwanted textiles, books, CDs, DVDs, games, and other items.
The scheme was organised by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Oxford City Council, which promoted the recycling scheme.
Council executive board member for Cleaner Greener Oxford John Tanner said: “‘The Moving Out Campaign shows how much money can be made from things that people often just throw into landfill. Well done Oxford students, your Wombling credentials are intact.”
