Workers told to get on their bikes for good health

WORKERS at Oxford Business Park were encouraged to get into the saddle as part of a national cycling event yesterday.

Oxford East MP Andrew Smith visited the business park in John Smith Drive to mark national cycle to work day.

Pure Offices, which manages the business park, organised a sustainable transport event to encourage people to make the switch from car to bike.

The company provides four bicycles as part of a bike-share scheme, a secure cycle store, showers, a towel service and lockers for employees at the business park to use.

Mr Smith said: “Cycling is good for your health, your wallet and the planet.

“As a keen cyclist, I have experience of cycling around Oxford.

“I hope today’s roadshow at the business park and national cycle to work festivities encourage even more people on to their bikes here in Oxford.”

This is all well and good, but what's needed is proper investment in public transport, cycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Oxford simply can't cope with the current level of cars and the endless congestion, pollution and space required to accommodate them.

For years we have known that building more roads simply creates more traffic. At least 6 million is being spend on the A34 junction at Kennington and the general response is to grumble. The inevitable result is both short term and long term near gridlock. Children returning back to school doesn't need to put as much extra pressure on our roads as it currently does.

A small proportion of this 'investment' could make safe cycle routes for children to cycle to school throughout Oxford and cut congestion for those who need drive. Countries that invest in people friendly streets have over half of all children cycling to school. In the UK it's less than one in fifty children cycling to school. Lack of any vision and proper investment inevitability leads to an increasing cycle of perceived car dependency.

Oxford needs some leadership. Rather than forever throwing money at encouraging more people to drive Oxford needs to plan for an urban environment which gives people proper choices. Choices that are healthy, clean, efficient, social and practical. Choices which improve journeys made both with and without your car.
