OXFORD’S Helen and Douglas House children’s hospice has urged charities to apply for up to £10,000 through the Oxford Mail.

The Mail’s parent company, Gannett Media, is offering grants of between £5,000 and £10,000 through its charitable wing, the Gannett Foundation.

Helen and Douglas House in Magdalen Road, East Oxford, was last year awarded £9,000 towards new equipment and facilities.

Directory of income generation Lindsey Rennard said: “I would encourage anyone to apply to the Gannet Foundation.

“We rely almost entirely on donations from people in the community and from trusts and foundations to be able to run the two hospice houses.

“The money from the Gannett Foundation has meant we have been able to buy specific equipment and improve our facilities for the young people who spend time with us.”

Deputy director of clinical services Liz Leigh said: “From medical supplies and hoists to a TV, the new equipment we have been able to buy due to the Gannett Foundation has been a huge help in continuing to provide a specialist holistic service for our patients.

“I would certainly encourage others to apply to the Gannett Foundation.”

The Didcot, Abingdon and Wantage Talking Newspaper (DAWN) received £6,848 in 2010 to begin recording newspapers on to USB flash drives. Oxford’s Yellow Submarine, which helps people with special needs, received £10,800 in 2012 to build its city-centre cafe.

Oxford Mail editor Simon O’Neill said: “We support those registered charities with projects which take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighbourhood improvements, economic development, youth development, local problem-solving, assistance to disadvantaged or disabled people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment.”
