OPPONENTS of Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza strip took to the streets of Oxford in support of victims of the conflict.

Protesters made a circuit of the city centre on Saturday afternoon, handing out leaflets to passing shoppers.

As many as 700 people took part in the march, which was organised by a collection of groups including the Oxford Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Oxford University Arab Culture Society.

Bus services had to be diverted along the route, which included George Street.

Marchers later gathered in Bonn Square to listen to speeches.

Designer and architect, John Lewicki, 29, of Summertown, Oxford, was among those taking part. He said: “I was marching in solidarity with those who suffer injustice, which the West is partly responsible for.”
