OXFORDSHIRE paid tribute to Britain’s armed forces at a special flag-raising ceremony yesterday.

The ceremony took place at Oxford Castle to mark the week leading up to the annual national Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

It brought together senior representatives of the armed forces community in Oxfordshire from RAF Brize Norton, RAF Benson, Bicester Garrison, Abingdon Station, 7 Rifles, the Defence Academy, the Royal Navy, Oxford University Officers’ Training Corps, the Royal British Legion and cadets from across the county.

Anne Purse, the chairwoman of Oxfordshire County Council, pictured inset, right, said: “Oxfordshire is a county that has long had incredibly strong connections to the armed forces. It is right that the nation should recognise annually the part that the forces play in our day-to-day lives as well as in protecting the country.”

Ms Purse was joined by the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Mohammed Abbasi and the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Tim Stevenson.
