A LOST canary is enjoying a new friendship while the woman who found it tries to trace its owner.

Ania Rybacka discovered the bird in Albert Street, Jericho, Oxford, on Monday, while walking her labrador Gustaw.

The two animals are getting along well, but Miss Rybacka is keen to reunite the bird with its owner.

Miss Rybacka, who works as a carer in Headington, added: “They’re sort of friends, it’s sweet. Gustaw’s just happy there’s something else in the house that isn’t a human.

“I’m not worried about him attacking the bird or anything, he’s just so lovely and calm.”

She said: “I saw something yellow flying around. At first I thought it was a butterfly.

“It seems very happy with humans. I caught it easily and it’s been sitting on my shoulder since.”

Despite enjoying looking after the bird, Miss Rybacka, 33, wants to return it to its owner as soon as possible and has been putting up posters in the area.

She said: “I’ll keep it for a week or two and then I’ll probably give it to a pet shop.”

The canary’s owners can get in touch with the Oxford Mail by calling 01865 425403.
