THE war on obesity is growing almost as fast as the nation’s waistlines. But with all measures there needs to be common sense behind it.

In theory, the council’s proposal to ban kebab and burger vans near schools seems sensible.

Following the furore outside Cheney School last year, it is keen to ensure children are not given easy access to potentially unhealthy food.

But the council seem to be closing the stable doors after the horse has bolted.

The kebab van in question has long since left and no other vans have expressed any desire to go near schools.

The council says it is safeguarding for the future, but even then the policy has holes in.

Much like a late-night kebab on a Friday, perhaps this policy needs a second thought before tucking in.
