Competition aims to stir up some friendly rivalry
STREETS in West Oxford will be competing against each other for the next few weeks as part of a new community initiative.
The new venture is called “road rage”, and will see teams made up of residents from each of the area’s streets take on each other at a different sport or competition each week.
Harley Road resident Lois Muddiman, who is one of the organisers, said: “When we held the first one on Sunday, May 25, more than 50 people turned up and we played rounders.

“It is a nice event for lots of people in the community to meet each other informally.
“Some people take part, some people like to sit and watch. It is an opportunity to build a stronger community.
“It is a nice way to spend a late Sunday afternoon and we are going to be doing a range of different things.
Ms Muddiman added: “We want it to appeal to everyone and not everyone is sporty so we have got plans for a bake-off and a pub quiz.”
At the first event there were eight streets represented but not enough people from all the streets attended so they were merged into four teams – some were made of whole streets while others were a mixture.
On Sunday, the second in the series, the residents played capture the flag.
The events will culminate in a final which will take place at the West Oxford Fun Day in Botley Park on July 12.
City councillor for Jericho and Osney Susanna Pressel said: “The Botley Road area of my ward is full of amazing people who keep coming up with brilliant and imaginative new ideas for community events.
“A lot of the streets off Botley Road already have very well-attended annual street parties, which bring people together; this new project will take that one step further.
“It sounds as though it will be great fun for people of all ages.”
The events take place at 5.30pm at the Oatlands Road recreation ground on Sundays.
