PROTESTERS marched through Oxford city centre to campaign against the use of fossil fuels.

The Fossil Free Future demonstration started in Radcliffe Square on Saturday morning and marched its way to Bonn Square.

Speakers at the event included Dr Brenda Boardman, a trustee of Low Carbon Oxford North and emeritus fellow at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute.

The campaigners were calling on businesses, as well as Oxfordshire’s councils and Oxford University, to stop investing in fossil fuel companies.

He said: “It would make a massive statement if the university decided to divest its endowment in fossil fuels.

“It should put its money in something else rather than investing in things that are potentially undermining our futures.”

Oxford University spokesman Stuart Gillespie said: “Oxford University Student Union has asked the university to divest its endowment from holdings in companies involved in exploration for, or exploitation of, fossil fuels.

“In order to provide a fully-considered response, a consultation has been launched to seek evidence and opinion from across the collegiate university.

“The university’s socially responsible investment review committee will collect views and make a recommendation to the university council in the autumn on what response to make to OUSU’s representation.”
