‘Move to Birmingham’ council U-turn

OXFORD City Council has performed a U-turn and is now working to keep a single dad and his daughter in Oxford rather than making them move to Birmingham.

Yesterday the Oxford Mail revealed Jason Stone and his five-year-old daughter Ashlie were being told they could not stay in the city.

Housing officers said this was because there were not enough homes in the private rental market under the Local Housing Allowance rate of £825.80 a month.

Waiter Mr Stone, 29, had found properties in Rose Hill that had a rent of £850 per month, but officers said he could not have that even if he offered to make up the rest from his own pocket.

Now, the council have agreed that if one of Mr Stone’s family members can act as a guarantor they will allow him to rent somewhere over the LGA allowance.

But Mr Stone is still struggling. He said: “The only houses I can rent cost way more than that.’’

A council spokesman said: “This is something for the resident to decide on before they progress.”
