IT MAY not look much like one now, but this mesh will soon become a polar bear.

The float is destined to be Fusion Arts centre’s entry into the Cowley Road Carnival.

Leigh Bayley, 12, pictured, was among those who worked on the bear’s frame on Wednesday in a session that was part of the centre’s project Culturevators.

It is being led by community artists Helen Jacobs and Emily Cooling and learning assistant Zoe Gray, from Headington.

Ms Gray, 25, said: “The theme this year is ‘Oxford characters’, so we decided to go with creatures from Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series.

On the day of the carnival, she said, children from New Marston Primary School would be following the float dressed as spirit animals from Pullman’s series, known as “daemons”.

The next Culturevators meeting will take place in the Fusion Arts centre, behind East Oxford Community Centre in Princes Street, on June 18 at 4pm. All are welcome.
