THOUSANDS of people run marathons every year, but Oxford’s roller derby team have skated one to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

Nine members of Oxford Wheels of Gory roller derby team each skated 11 laps of the Goodwood Motor Circuit near Chichester, which comes to just over 26 miles each.

They did the challenge on Sunday, raising £886, as dozens of teams from across the country gathered at the circuit for the South Coast Roll.

Team member and Greater Leys resident Nic Marlow said: “It’s a beautiful course and it was a great day out. There were lots of other derby teams there.

“We really lucked out with the weather, although it was a little bit hot and a little bit windy.”

The 34-year-old said: “At our AGM we decided by a vote that Alzheimer’s Society would be our charity of the year, because lots of our members have been affected by it.”
