CHILDREN recreated a famous portrait at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum on Bank Holiday Monday.
They were photographed sitting in front of Edward Manet’s 1868 Portait of Mademoiselle Claus while wearing a similar dress and hat to that worn by the woman in the painting.
It was part of a Manet-themed children’s activity day, which also included making jigsaws of paintings and then trying to find the artwork in the gallery.
Nine-year-old Rhiannon Lee dressed up for a photograph after travelling from Camberley in Surrey with parents Jason and Sharon and 11-year-old brother Theo.
She said: “I hadn’t been expecting to dress up in white but it was fun.
“It felt a bit weird because everyone was staring at me.”
Mrs Lee said: “It brought the portrait to life – it was fabulous and Rhiannon loved it.
“We came to the museum to give her a view of the artists from the past and didn’t know this was going on.”
The museum raised £7.83m to buy the painting in 2012.
