CITY of Oxford College trainees have won three awards at the SkillBuild construction competition.

Oxford resident Philip Collins, 17, came first in the junior carpentry.

Headington resident Elliott James, 19, came third in the senior category, and 16-year-old Jack Brandon, from Kennington, came third in the junior joinery round.

They were competing in the southern regional heat, which saw more than 100 construction apprentices from around the area competing for the top spot.

The top 10 competitors from across the 14 regional heats will go through to the national final at the Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC in November.

Janette Welton-Pai, the Construction Industry Training Board’s sector strategy manager for the south east, said: “We’re really excited to bring SkillBuild 2014 to Oxfordshire.

“There is some great construction talent in the region so we’re looking forward to seeing what our young apprentices can do.

“The event at Oxford College was a great success with a high level of entries. Well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to all of the winners.”
