RISINGHURST businesses are campaigning for speed bumps to be installed after a car collided with a child.

Tattoo parlour Oxford Ink is calling for Oxfordshire County Council to put in the speed calming measures on The Roundway after a boy was hurt on Wednesday.

Tattooist Jamie Gardiner and his colleagues called an ambulance and the police after the collision outside the parlour.

The child was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, and was reportedly kept overnight for observation.

The incident involved a silver Renault Clio. The female driver gave a statement to the police and has not been arrested.

The next day Oxford Ink staff began the campaign, posting flyers in the other shops and businesses on the road.

Mr Gardiner said: “We want speed bumps or some other measure to stop drivers going so quick. People just go too fast up and down this part of the road.”

The Roundway is a small sliproad between London Road and the eastern branch of the ring road with houses and a promenade of eight shops, including a supermarket, cafe and pharmacy.

Mr Gardiner added: “There are close misses nearly every day. It was going to happen sooner or later. This was the final straw.”

Selma Harb owns the Roundway Pharmacy on the promenade.

She said: “A lot of people seem to speed along here as if there’s nobody around.

“By the shops the cars are parked on both sides, so if you’re going faster than you should be it’s hard to see what’s going on on the pavement.

County cabinet member for transport David Nimmo Smith said: “I didn’t know there had been an accident.

“If it was a main road then I would say no [to speed bumps] because we have to keep the traffic moving, but it’s a residential road in a residential area.

“I’m not going to make any promises, but it’s certainly something we can look at.”

County council spokesman Martin Crabtree said: “We do not currently have any plans for traffic calming at this location. We prioritise our limited resources towards areas where there is most need.

“The police investigate the circumstances of all accidents such as this, and we will look at their findings when they are available.”
