Last year the event raised £15,000 and it is understood that organisers expect this year’s run to have raised raised even more.

MP for Oxford East Andrew Smith fired the starting pistol. He said: “The Oxford Fun Run is one of the big events on my calendar.

“It always attracts lots of different people from businesses, education groups and foreign students and plenty of local people too.

“It’s a brilliant event that raises money for local charities and the Rotary Club has my warmest congratulations on another success.”

The club is celebrating its 90th birthday in 2014. It meets on Mondays at 1pm in the Randolph Hotel, in Beaumont Street, and is seeking new members.
