FAMILIES got a taste of the outdoors an a bushcraft day in Wytham Woods, learning basic survival skills like setting up shelters and making fires.

Seven-year-old Francis Garcia Shapley said: “My favourite bit was the fire. We learned how to make fire the modern way and ancient ways like rubbing wood together and flints.

“I liked learning about the quickest way to make fire. If you got lost in the woods or on a desert you could do that.

“We made a fire and then we cooked fish for lunch on it. It was nice.”

Francis’s dad Jonathan Shapley said: “We didn’t know what to expect, but it was great. There was lots to learn for kids and adults.”
