CLOCKS, jewellery and art were some of the items valued by TV antiques expert Eric Knowles in Witney on Saturday.

The Antiques Roadshow ceramics expert was at Witney Congregational Church to support a fundraising day for youth charity Base 33.

Alan Townsend, from Witney, had a 1920s Japanese vase valued He said: “Eric was very pleasant and amiable. It was a very well-organised day and it was nice to go and support a charity.”

About 300 people attended the event, which raised more than £2,000 for Base 33.

Charity director Claire Dowan said: “I was waiting for someone to say ‘it’s worth £1m’ but we never had that.

“But there were a few people who were pleasantly surprised by the valuation they were given.

“A lot of people just wanted to know the history and date of their item and it was great for them to meet someone from TV in person.”

The event included a performance from baritone Quentin Hayes and Base 33’s music project Listen 2 Da Base, as well as talks from local antique dealers.

There were also children’s entertainment, a bouncy castle, face painting, barbecue and stalls selling arts and crafts. Rotary Club of Witney members volunteered as helpers.

Ms Dowan added: “Of course the money is important but it was also about making contact with the community and having the opportunity to tell people about what we do.”
