Members of Witney U3A (University of the Third Age), visited the Agrivert recycling plant at Cassington to find out what happens to their food waste once it is collected from their homes.

Fifteen members of the science and technology group heard a talk by Agrivert managers before going on a tour of the site, at Worton Farm, on April 23.

The plant has an average daily input of 135 tonnes of solid waste and 90 tonnes of liquid waste, including almost of all the food waste collected in Witney.

Members were shown how the plant makes fertiliser for local farms and generates enough electricity each year to power 4,200 homes, by capturing 4.5m cubic metres of methane gas to power its 2.1-megawatt generator.

  • U3A is a lifelong learning group for older people no longer in full-time work. Witney U3A meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 2pm at the High Street Methodist Church. New members are always welcome. Contact Shirley Ashmore at shirleyu3a@icloud.com or see witneyu3a.org.uk
