A PUB landlord is critically injured in a Portuguese hospital after he was hit by a car while on a golf holiday.

Stan Hawkeswood, who has run the Queen’s Head in Horspath for nine years, suffered a bleed on the brain and broke his leg in two places in the Algarve accident last Saturday.

He slips in and out of consciousness and has yet to speak, with his few movements so far being the squeezing of his wife Janet’s hand.

Last night his two daughters Amy and Cara said they did not know if he would fully recover.

The family are also hoping to bring the 65-year-old home soon so he can be treated at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.

Amy Hawkeswood, 27, said: “He is our heartbeat and we want to bring him home. The hardest thing is not being able to be there with him.”

The special medical flight could cost the family £16,500 if his insurers will not cover it.

Sports fan Mr Hawkeswood, the Church Road pub landlord for nine years, was with 15 other Horspath Golf Society members on the group’s annual trip to Albufeira.

After a meal out with the group he took a taxi back alone before the 1am accident outside his hotel.

None of the group knew he had been hurt until the morning when he did not turn up for breakfast. They asked local police and hospital staff before finding out he had been hurt in the road accident. And because Mr Hawkeswood has not come round yet, the family will not know what happened until the police release a report.

The village pub is hosting a live band tomorrow from 7.30pm and will be collecting any donations to help cover the costs of the landlord’s medical care.

Miss Hawkeswood said it was a chance to get everyone together. She added: “It is not about the money but everyone is asking if they can help and it would be nice to bring everyone in here.”

Mr Hawkeswood’s eldest daughter Cara Busby, 28, said the family would not know how well he would recover until he became responsive.

She said: “It is going to be a long road. We have to take one day at a time.”

But she said: “He has great support from friends and family.”

The two daughters are hoping to fly out to Portugal next week to be with the grandfather-of-three. They also thanked everyone who had offered their support.

Prayers were said at St Giles’s Church on Sunday.

Church Road resident John Hilland, who was on the trip with Mr Hawkeswood, said: “A lot of people are thinking of him and praying for him.”

Horspath Parish Council chairman Peter Dobson said: “The Queen’s Head is a focal point in our community. On behalf of everyone in the village we wish Stan a full and speedy recovery.”
