PLANS to convert a shop into the sixth supermarket on Headington’s London Road are under consideration by the city council.

The East Area Planning committee will meet next week and has been recommended to approve plans to extend the site on 83-85 London Road.

Tesco put in planning applications to install a cash machine and a shop front at the proposed site.

But Sam Green, 25, pictured, who co-manages the Oxford Furniture Warehouse on London Road with her mother Chris Green, is furious that there will be another supermarket in the area.

The Greens previously had their business on the London Road site. But they were given an eviction notice in September to vacate it and had to move to new premises along the road just two weeks before Christmas.

Miss Green said: “There’s far too many supermarkets. We don’t need another one. We were due to be in that premises until 2015.

“So because Tesco moved in early, we lost a few sales over the Christmas period. I don’t think Headington needs a Tesco.

“It is a case of supermarket wars. As soon as Sainsbury’s came in, they thought they needed to come in quickly.”

The business is frustrated with the number of supermarkets moving into Headington, which now has Morrisons, Londis, the Co-op, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

Miss Green added: “Because the supermarkets are so big and powerful, they can afford to move in where they want.”

But Headington Action chairman Patrick Coulter said: “There seems to be a surfeit of supermarkets which many people are unhappy about, but it is difficult to control under current planning rules.”

In the report published ahead of the council meeting, planning officer Kerrie Gaughan said: “The proposals are considered to represent development appropriate to the Headington district shopping centre, in terms of design and street scene, highway safety, crime prevention, and noise and disturbance.”

The officer has recommended that planning permission be approved by the city council.

Beth Greenhouse, corporate affairs manager of Tesso, said: “We would like to open an Express store on London Road.

“The store would offer up to 20 jobs and recruitment will be done locally. We believe this would be an excellent site for an Express and have been pleased to hear from many residents who welcome our plans.”

The planning meeting will be held on Thursday at the Town Hall.
