IRISH artist Sean Lynch brought his show of stone carvings to Modern Art Oxford to honour tradesmen who made the city great.

“A blow-by-blow account of stonecarving in Oxford” will run until June 8 and is inspired by brothers’ John and James O’Shea’s work in Oxford.

They came to the city in the 19th century to work on the now-iconic Oxford Museum of Natural History in Parks Road from 1858 to its opening in 1860.

The artist said: “I was aware of the O’Shea’s work and I thought, in some ways, it needed to be reintroduced.”

Until Sunday, stone carvers Stephen Burke and Andy Tanser will demonstrate their trade during opening hours.

The free Pembroke Street gallery is open from 11am to 6pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and noon to 5pm on Sundays.
