A MAN has been jailed for 15 years for what a judge called depraved sexual abuse of his daughter from the age of five.

Terry Haynes, 71, of Mathews Way, Abingdon, was convicted after a trial of 12 counts of rape, 11 counts of indecent assault and one attempted rape carried out between 1980 and 1990.

Yesterday, Judge Patrick Eccles condemned his “gross hypocrisy” in repeatedly raping his daughter while telling people he was an ordained free church minister.

During a four-day trial last month at Oxford Crown Court, the jury heard that he was known to others as the Rev Haynes.

The victim of all but one of his crimes was his daughter Teresa Haynes, who waived her right to anonymity. After his conviction she said she had forgiven him and added: “No amount of time in prison is going to change what he did.”

Haynes was also convicted of an attempted rape of another woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Lisa Matthews, defending, admitted there was little she could say in mitigation because her client still maintained he was innocent.

She told Judge Eccles that the pensioner suffered from chronic back, neck and hip pain, anxiety and depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes.

Miss Matthews said: “The main concern is that he will die in prison and that is what he and his family most fear.”

Judge Eccles said he would reduce Haynes’s prison sentence from a starting point of 18 years to 15 in light of his ill health.

He added: “Whatever the true number of offences over the years, 12 rapes and 11 sexual assaults represent depravity and sexual crimes of a very grave order.”

Judge Eccles added that it was ‘tragic’ that both of Haynes’s victims had also been raped and sexually abused by other men.

In 2012 former Salvation Army volunteer James Summers, then 79, was jailed for raping Ms Haynes and other young girls in the 1980s.

It was also revealed yesterday that her father was convicted of two indecent assaults against young men in 1962.
