MEMBERS of Carterton Women’s Institute are hoping that Witney Gazette readers can tell them the story behind this photograph.
It comes from the town archives and shows a group of women and girls on the steps of the town’s WI Hall.
Carterton WI president Lynn Enston said: “We would like to know when it was taken, who they are and why are the girls dressed in a uniform?
“The older woman in the middle at the front is, we believe, Mrs Offley-Shore, the wife of the vicar of Black Bourton.”
And reader Pat Collis was able to tell Christine Tinson, from Filkins, about a photograph that she had found while clearing out her 102-year-old grandmother Ethel Gould’s home in Witney, after she died in January, which was published in the Witney Gazette on March 19.
Mr Collis said it was taken in 1931 and was of the members of the Witney ambulance division of the St John Ambulance Brigade.
The unit was formed in 1929.
His father Sid Collis, who was 23 at the time, is in the front row, second from the right.
