A FAMILY who set up CCTV in their Oxford home after it was broken into filmed a burglar while he went into their home as they slept.

Drug addict Justin Bourton took a laptop, mobile phone, car keys, and a wallet from the Iffley house before stealing a £30,000 BMW from outside.

The family had been burgled a year before and had set up CCTV which captured Bourne at the Courtland Road property, an Oxford Crown Court judge heard on Thursday. Bourton was jailed for 44 months.

Simon Ward, prosecuting, said homeowner James Moore, his wife and two children had gone up to bed at about 10pm on July 3 last year.

He said Mr Moore came down at about 6.45am, adding: “He had his breakfast, had a shower, and went to pick up his wallet and keys which should have been on the kitchen counter. But he couldn’t find them.”

He said the burglary victim then went outside to find his estate car had also been stolen.

Bourton, of Dashwood Road, in Rose Hill, Oxford, was arrested eight days later after a police officer recognised him on the CCTV images. He admitted burglary and theft last month.

The family’s car was later recovered.

In a victim impact statement Mr Moore, originally from New Zealand, said: “This is the second time we have targeted by thieves in the year-and-a-half we have been in the UK.

“We were just getting over the last round when we were targeted again.

“We do not feel safe in our home. We lost a lot of sleep after the burglary and are still jumpy.”

Bourton also asked for an offence of criminal damage and eight other burglaries to be taken into consideration.

Timothy Boswell, defending, said Bourton had fallen back into Class A drug abuse at the time of the crime and he asked the judge to consider a suspended sentence with a supervision order.

He said: “It is fair to say that Mr Bourton went back into the grip of drug addiction and fell off the rails badly.”

But passing sentence, Judge Gordon Risius told Bourton: “I am afraid I am not prepared to take a chance on you.”

He added: “Serve your sentence and then start life in the community again with a clean slate.

“But whatever you do, stay off drugs for good this time.”
