A LONG-SERVING headteacher stepped out in style yesterday.

Mark Chesterton retired from Larkrise Primary School, in Boundary Brook Road, Oxford, after 25 years at the helm and took part in a parade with the whole school.

The Easter Hat Parade has taken place every year since the school opened in 1972.

The whole school – staff and pupils – parade around the Boundary Brook estate with a detour into the street.

The parade was led by the Larkrise Samba Band with Mr Chesterton playing the Surdo, a big bass drum.

Mr Chesterton, 64, said: “It’s been a brilliant day and one which I will keep in my memory for many, many years to come.

“Seeing so many families from such diverse backgrounds celebrating together is the perfect way to end my time at this wonderful school.’’

Ed Finch, a teacher at the school, said: “Our Easter Hat Parade is always a lovely way to celebrate our community and to welcome the spring.

“Using the event as a chance to bid a fond farewell to Mr Chesterton made it even more special this year.”

He will be succeeded by current deputy head Debbie Fearnley.
