MEMBERS of the United Nations met at an Oxford school yesterday to debate the deepening crisis in Ukraine.

However, it was not the likes of Barack Obama at Oxford High School, but teenagers taking part in a Model United Nations General Assembly.

The sixth-formers from across the county, including Wallingford School, Bartholomew, Didcot Girls’ School and Gosford Hill, represented 30 countries to take part in the activities.

Ollie Bingham was on a team of three from Matthew Arnold School representing Mexico.

The 17-year-old from Cumnor said: “It was quite heated at times. But there was a really good spirit and it was fun.”

They also debated slavery, small arms proliferation, water and sanitation and violence against women.

The debate on the Ukraine issue led to a narrow victory for the Russian side of the argument.
