Trio of musicians are ready for the Oxfordshire Youth Concerto
6:00am Thursday 6th March 2014 in News
THREE Oxford University students will tonight take to the stage at the Sheldonian for the final of the Oxfordshire youth concerto competition.
Pianist Zizhou Zhang, violinist Enyuan Khong and flautist Daniel Shao will each perform concertos by Scandinavian musicians.
Christchurch college student Zizhou Zhang, 18, has been playing piano since he was five.
He said: “I am nervous because it is such a huge competition with an amazing, professional orchestra. There is a lot of pressure but at the same time, I want to have a great time.”
Miss Khong, a 21-year-old Jesus College student, has played violin for more than 15 years.
She practises for four hours each day and admits: “It can be a struggle to fit it all in but you have to be well organised.”
The third musician is Daniel Shao, a finalist for the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest.
The flautist from St Katz College will perform Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute & Orchestra.
The winner will take home a cheque for £1,000 and the chance to perform during the Oxford Philomusica’s concert series.
