HEADINGTON went bananas yesterday for sweet treats and fresh fruit on London Road in a special event to promote Fairtrade fortnight.
County councillor for Headington and Quarry Roz Smith was joined at the Windmill Fairtrade store by the Bishop of Oxford John Pritchard, Barbara Clothier and Lord Mayor Dee Sinclair.
Keen shoppers queued from 8am at the farmers’ market yesterday to pick up Fairtrade toffee and banana doughnuts from Pippin Doughnuts. They had sold out by 9am.
The event aims to promote Fairtrade products, which see farmers receive a better deal for their work.
Ms Smith said: “It was a fantastic success despite the rain. I am a great supporter of Fairtrade, from when I used to work in retail. In India, I could see for myself what poverty was like and that fair prices were not being paid for goods.”
The event was hosted by John Coyle from the Windmill shop, which will also be offering a free breakfast in a bag next Saturday for the first 50 customers who buy something at the store.
