Flood barriers were taken down in West Oxford yesterday as river levels continued to fall.
Staff removed the flood defences in East Street on Osney Island and prepared to remove those by Hinksey Lake, South Oxford.
The final flood warning for the city, between Newbridge and Kings Lock, telling residents flooding is expected, was lifted by the Environment Agency on Sunday. An agency spokesman said: “The situation in Oxford is improving and river levels are falling.
“We have reviewed the current situation and assessed that some of our temporary flood defences are now able to be removed. A team has been removing temporary barriers at East Street and the defences in South Oxford are also being removed.
“The temporary defences in South Hinksey will remain in place for the time being.”
The River Thames and tributaries in the Oxford area remain on flood alert, which means flooding is possible.
Yesterday the level of the river at Kings Mill lock was 1.83 metres, considered to be within the normal range.
