Edwardian hall in need of a modern makeover
THE trustees of a 94-year-old village hall are hoping to renovate the building.
Over the past four years, Littlemore Village Hall has had new heating installed and a new roof installed while volunteers have helped to clean up the building.
Now the committee wants to hear views from residents on what else they would like to see built as part of the planned renovation, and is encouraging people to get involved in the project.
Village Hall trustee Julian Armitstead believes the work will cost in excess of £100,000.
He said: “I think the village hall has tremendous potential because it is a unique building in Littlemore.
“It is an Edwardian hall, and a really good place.
“However we are fighting a battle to keep it going.
“It is a very old building – although we have a new roof and new central heating system, we need a new toilet block, new kitchen and boundary walls.”
The hall in Railway Lane has a stage, kitchen and toilets and was built in 1919 after villagers raised the money to build it.
It is regularly used by community groups including two youth clubs, a Brownie pack and a bingo group.
Mr Armistead said hall trustees would be applying for funding and would continue to fundraise. He added: “It is a work in progress. We are looking at a few years.
“We are developing a priority list. We need to start with the infrastructure and build towards a wish list to develop the facility.”
The trustees and members of the village hall committee met with an architect last Thursday to discuss the hall’s potential.
Committee member and Littlemore resident Pat Good said: “The residents themselves they raised the money to build it.
“It is a villager’s hall and we should be proud.”
The village hall skills team will be meeting up again on March 15 and new volunteers are needed to help with small jobs around the hall and its grounds. Residents can also fill out a questionnaire to give feedback about the future of the hall and what activities they would like to see it used for.
All replies will be entered into a prize draw for a £10 Marks & Spencer gift card.
