The victim is being treated at Headington’s John Radcliffe Hospital and his condition is today described as stable.
Det Ch Insp Mark Johns, investigating the incident, appealed for anyone with information about the stabbing to call 101.
He said: “At this stage, we are investigating the circumstances and trying to establish exactly why the victim was attacked in such a vicious manner.
“Incidents of this nature in Oxford are rare and I would like to reassure members of the community that a team of detectives are working hard to trace the man responsible and arrest him.
“I would urge anyone who was in the area of Fairacres Road yesterday evening or who has any information about the incident to contact me.”
