OXFORD GCSE students were treated to lectures from some of the country’s most celebrated and famous scientists on Thursday.

At the New Theatre, George Street, GCSE Science Live! saw Channel 4 documentary star Lord Robert Winston giving a talk to students aged 14 to 16.

Prof Winston said: “I do these events because I believe that science literacy is crucially important in a modern society.

“It’s why I established the Wohl Reach Out lab at Imperial College and why I visit one or two schools each week.”

Prof Winston was one of five scientists talking, with the pupils receiving lectures from chemist Prof Andrea Sella, research geneticist Prof Steve Jones, space scientist Dr Maggie-Aderin-Pocock and engineer Prof Mark Miodownik.

Oxford resident Patricia Crowley thanked the lecturers, and said: “My 14-year-old son came home buzzing after the talks.”
