Grant and mystery money funds Kennington computer club
SCHOOL pupils in Kennington can use new computers at a youth club thanks to a grant and an anonymous donation.
Kafe IT will offer its after school computer club on a weekly basis at 3.45pm from next Thursday at the Kennington Youth Club.
It follows a £6,000 grant awarded by Oxfordshire County Council and a gift of £3,000 from a mystery benefactor.
It is paying for equipment and also for a supervisor.
The club, behind the Kennington Social and Sports Club on Kennington Road, will be open to all Kennington young people in school years six to 11 for £1 a week.
Pupils will also gain membership of the youth club, which previously opened on Mondays only.
Chairman Roy King said: “It will be an opportunity for leisure and homework but really it is what we call an off-the-bus thing.
“The café will open in the afternoon and will close at about 5pm.
“It’s great that we can expand the amount of days we are open and we are very grateful to the county council for the funding.”
The county funding came through the Positive Activities Fund and happened when youngsters from Kennington presented to a panels of trained young judges.
The fund provides funding to youth-led projects which increase positive activities for young people across the county.
To apply for funding, projects must be targeted at children and young people 11 to 19 years.
It has provided funding of more than £189,000 to 48 projects across Oxfordshire.
Mr King added: “We are extremely proud of our young people for achieving this.”
Kennington Parish Council chairman Colin Charlett said the opening was “fantastic news”.
He said: “It is excellent and everyone involved with this project should be very pleased.
“Anything that gives youngsters somewhere to go off the streets is good for the village.
“We were happy to give this scheme our support.”
