New Rose Hill Centre plans to be revealed
REVISED plans for Rose Hill’s new £3m community centre are set to be revealed this month.
Construction of the facility was due to start last month but Oxford City Council acted on feedback from an exhibition in August and has drawn up amended plans.
The new exhibition will run in the week starting February 10 at the existing community centre in The Oval and Rose Hill and Donnington Advice Centre in Ashhurst Way. Drop-in sessions will also be held at the community centre and the advice centre, where residents can quiz city council officers.
Ed Turner, deputy leader of the council and member for Rose Hill, said: “We have done our best to take on board feedback and we welcome input from everyone, even at this late stage.
“Hopefully we are going out to look for a builder very shortly.”
He added: “It is the most important facility for Rose Hill in generations and people are very excited about it.”
The centre will bring together a social club, advice centre, sports pavilion and the youth club.
It will be built on the site of the playground in the recreation ground in Ashhurst Way.
The existing community centre will be demolished and the land could be used for housing.
Ray James, chairman of the Rose Hill Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, said: “I thought that work would have started on it in the next three months.
“I have mixed feelings. Obviously I want the community to have the opportunity to be involved. I just want the building to finish so people can begin to use it.”
Bill Buckingham, 92, secretary of Rose Hill Community Centre Association, which runs the existing centre in The Oval, said they had begun talks about the running of the new community centre but said: “It is going to take a lot of sorting out. We are beginning to do the process. There is a long way to go.”
It is hoped that the project will be completed by early 2015.
Funding will come from developer contributions.
