VICTIMS of the Holocaust were remembered at a service at Oxford Town Hall.
The day of remembrance commemorates the millions of people who have been murdered or persecuted during the Holocaust under the Nazis, and in genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
A candle was lit by Penny Faust of the Oxford Jewish Congregation as a mark of respect.
She said: “We have this kind of feeling that genocide couldn’t happen again, but it has happened since the Second World War, for example in the Balkans.
“It is not something we should forget.”
Lord Mayor of Oxford Dee Sinclair also attended yesterday’s service.
She said: “It is very important we remember what persecution and racial hatred can do and is still doing in parts of the world.
“It was solemn, quiet and respectful. It was very appropriate and quite moving.”
The day has been commemorated in the UK since 2001, and in 2005, the United Nations declared January 27 as an international day for remembrance and contemporary action.
