ACADEMICS yesterday had their pay docked for going on strike over wages.

Oxford University staff lost two hours’ pay and Oxford Brookes University workers lost a day’s wages over the 11am to 1pm walk-out. They want a pay increase of at least inflation of three per cent instead of the one per cent put forward.

More strikes are planned for Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm and Monday February 10 from 8am to 11am.

About 30 Brookes staff with the University and College Union (UCU) demonstrated at Gipsy Lane entrance to the campus.

Retired publishing lecturer Bob Hughes said the pledge to block pay was “extremely threatening”.

He said: “I worked at Brookes for ten years and I am sorry to say that is all too reminiscent of how they carried themselves in the past.

And senior lecturer in politics and international relations Martin Millar said: “Threatening to dock a whole day’s pay is like saying we might as well take the whole day off which we do not want to do.”

Oxford Brookes spokesman Matthew Butler said the university would not accept “partial performance” of any member of staff.

Some 21 academic UCU members demonstrated outside Oxford University’s Administration and Services building in Wellington Square.

Retired English lecturer and union spokesman Terry Hoad said staff had been hit by a real-terms pay cut of 13 per cent since 2009.

He said: “The university has the money to pay a decent increase.”

A further 13 also demonstrated outside The St Cross Building, St Cross Road.

University spokesman Pete Wilton said: “The university respects the right of individuals to take part in lawful industrial action.”
