SUPERMARKET Aldi is investigating an incident in which a city worker’s leg was trapped under two tonnes of cardboard.

The 32-year-old man was trapped when a stack of large compressed bales of recycled cardboard fell on him at Aldi, in Oxford’s Botley Road on Friday night.

Firefighters were called at 9pm and worked to free his trapped left leg while paramedics administered first aid and pain relief.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to the leg.

An Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Initially the paramedics were very concerned about the extent of the leg injury as they could not gain access the trapped limb.

“The rescue was particularly difficult as the fallen bales of cardboard were very unstable and could have resulted in the collapse of shelving immediately above the casualty”.

An Aldi spokesman said: “He is making a speedy recovery. We are looking into what happened but I cannot tell you anything else at this time.

“Our focus is on the employee and he is making a recovery.”

He would not comment on whether the incident was referred to the authorities. The Health and Safety Executive said it was not investigating.
