COURT cases in Oxford could be disrupted on Monday as lawyers walk out.

Barristers dressed in their wigs and gowns will be protesting outside Oxford Crown Court in St Aldate’s from 10am to 2pm.

They will join legal professionals across the country as part of a campaign against the Government’s proposed cuts to legal aid.

They say the cuts will mark the end of a “world-revered justice system”, taking Britain’s already stretched legal system past breaking point.

Sarah Forshaw QC, said: “For months we have tried to engage in constructive dialogue with the Government, offering them solutions that would both save money and preserve the British justice system.

“Having been ignored by the Justice Secretary Chris Grayling we feel there is no other option available but to make a stand.

“The walkout has been scheduled for a time where disruption will be kept to a minimum and we are keen to raise awareness of the concerns we have, without seriously damaging the system that we are immensely proud to be a part of. This issue is bigger than today.

“The whole justice system of this country, which has been the envy of the world for centuries, is at stake.”

The Government announced plans last year to cut £220m a year from the annual £1bn legal aid budget for criminal cases.
