PLANS have been submitted by BMW for a new covered test track at its Cowley car plant.

The track would have a canopy which would allow cars to be tested over long distances to establish any production faults.

Construction would take place over two phases, with phase one providing a canopy over the existing test track.

This would then be relocated in phase two over the new test track, to be constructed alongside the railway line.

A planning application has been submitted to Oxford City Council for the scheme and it will be discussed by the east area planning committee on Wednesday.

In a statement BMW said: “Although only a relative small scheme on site, it adds value to BMW (UK) Manufacturing Ltd associates and further demonstrates the continued long-term viability of the plant.

“This application is representative of a series of planning applications submitted recently, illustrating the clear expression and aspiration of BMW (UK) Manufacturing Ltd in supporting longer term future manufacturing at Plant Oxford and promoting good, secure and safe environments for all associates and visitors.”

City council planning officers have recommended the scheme be approved.

The committee will meet on Wednesday in the Town Hall, St Aldate’s at 6pm. The public can attend.
