CHRISTMAS was the quietest day of the year for the police, with officers being called out to just a handful of crimes in Oxford.

On Christmas Day officers were called to deal with four assaults, a bike theft, a drunk and disorderly crime, two thefts, and cases where two drivers left a petrol station without paying for fuel.

Supt Christian Bunt, Oxford area commander, also said there were 11 domestic incidents – lower than usual.

In total, the police issued details of 18 incidents, although the final figure has not been released.

Supt Bunt said: “It was very quiet on Christmas Day. It normally would be. From looking at the numbers I would suggest this was the quietest day of the year.

“Most people are at home and enjoying the day with friends and family.”

He added: “My officers continued to patrol and respond to incidents throughout Christmas Day.

“I was on foot patrol in the city centre on Christmas Eve and the pubs and clubs were very quiet. I can only presume people decided to stay closer to home.”
