CAMPAIGNERS are handing in their petition of more than 2,000 signatures against the £100m plans to redevelop West Way shopping centre tomorrow.

West Way Community Concern (WWCC) formed this year in opposition to Doric Properties’ plans to demolish West Way shopping centre and Elms Parade to make way for a supermarket, cinema, health centre, shops and 600 student flats.

They are handing in a petition to Vale of White Horse District Council at Abingdon Guildhall at a full council meeting from 7pm.

Co-chairwoman of West Way Community Concern Caroline Potter is due to address the council about residents’ concerns.

She said: “We want to make it clear to every councillor that while we support redevelopment at West Way, the current plans will be a disaster, and will change the whole nature of our community.”

A planning application is due to be submitted by Doric this month.

WWCC co-chairman Chris Church said: “We have always said that we are seeking a redevelopment that protects the Elms Parade shops, the Field House sheltered housing and our local vicarage.

“That is our bottom line and reflects the concerns from our survey work: we await Doric’s plans with interest.”

Before the meeting, WWCC is displaying the petition outside the Guildhall.

The sheets of signatures, which have been joined end to end, will be unrolled at around 6.30pm.
