Popular beauty spot Port Meadow in Oxford is currently closed off to the public as Thames Valley Police deal with an incident.

Emergency services including police and ambulance staff have been gathering in Walton Well Road, Jericho.

Several police patrol cars are parked by the Walton Well Road rail bridge and members of the public are being told they are not allowed onto the meadow.

It is understood that the other access points for the meadow, including Jubilee Gate, off Godstow Road, are also closed off and the Thames Valley Police helicopter is currently flying over the site.

So far no one from Thames Valley Police or South Central Ambulance service is available for comment.

A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire Service declined to comment on whether their staff were involved and referred the Oxford Mail to the police.

Rami Koujah, 22, a student at Oxford University, who lives in Roger Dudman Way, West Oxford, said: "The whole of Port Meadow is closed off.

"Someone from the emergency services told us there had been a chemical spill.

"It's shocking that chemicals are spilling out onto a nature reserve."

Sushila Dhall, chairman of Oxford Pedestrians Association, added: "I tried to get onto the meadow but I was turned away and was told there had been a toxic spillage.

"There were people in full-body suits and police are stopping people from going onto the meadow."
